Long Term Patterns Window

The Long Term Patterns window allows you to observe monthly and annual patterns in your data, and to detect long-term trends and discontinuities. To access this window, choose Long Term Analysis from the Analyze menu.

Tip: The Long Term Patterns window is only available if you have the Professional or higher edition of Windographer. Please visit www.windographer.com for information on the pricing and capability of each edition.

Display Settings

Choose between single-dataset and multi-dataset mode with the Dataset drop-down box. In multi-dataset mode the window will display info offers several options to view your data. The Data column drop-down box specifies the data column that is used for the analysis. If you choose to display the Frequency Rose, a drop-down box lets you choose which direction sensor you wish to use to define the direction sectors.

Use the Format buttons to choose between graphical or tabular format. Note that the tabular format often reports information that the graphical format does not, such as the number of time steps.

Trend Analysis

In this mode, Windographer tests for trends in the annual, quarterly, or monthly means of any data column. You choose a significance level, and Windographer reports whether each test detects a trend at that level of significance. The implemented trend tests are:

Discontinuity Analysis

Discontinuity tests look for abrupt changes in the slope or the mean value of the annual, quarterly, or monthly means of any data column. You choose a significance level, and Windographer reports whether each test detects a discontinuity at that level of significance. The implemented discontinuity tests are:

Histogram of Annual Means

If you choose this setting, Windographer calculates the annual means of the chosen data column, and then displays a histogram showing the frequency distibution of these means. Generally this graph is only interesting if you have a very long dataset, i.e. one spanning enough years to generate a relatively smooth histogram.

Frequency Rose by Year

This option shows a graph or table of the wind frequency distribution for each year in your dataset. Each year appears as a line in the graph (or column in the corresponding table). An overall profile (for all years combined) appears as well. This allows you to see how the wind direction profile varies over a number of years.

This setting is unique in that it requires you to choose a wind direction sensor to analyze, instead of an arbitrary data column. This is why the Data column drop-down box becomes a Direction sensor drop-down box when this option is selected. Windographer also allows you to select the number of sectors to use for the analysis.

Monthly Profile / Diurnal Profile by Year

These two choices generate a profile by month and time of day (respectively) for each year in your dataset. Each year appears as a line in the graph or column in the corresponding table. An overall profile for all years combined appears as well.

Frequency Histogram by Year

When you select this option , Windographer displays the frequency distribution of the selected data column for each year in the dataset, as well as an overall distribution for all years combined. You can set the bin size using the Bin settings controls.

Additional Considerations

The Filter by section allows you to focus on a subset of your data. For more information see the article on filtering data.

Right-click any graph to change its properties, copy the image to the clipboard, or export it to a file. Right-click on any table to export it to a file, or copy it. See the article on exporting graphs or exporting tables for more information.
