Data Column Type

Windographer allows you to categorize data columns according to the type of data they contain: wind speed, wind direction, solar radiation, temperature, battery voltage and so on.

Categorizing data columns in this way enables Windographer to do much more with the dataset. For example, if Windographer knows that a particular data column contains wind direction data, then it can produce a wind rose plot from the values in that data column. If it knows that one data column contains mean wind speeds and another contains the associated standard deviations, it can divide one by the other to calculate turbulence intensities. Categorization also allows you to generalize flag rules and calculated columns to refer to data column types rather than referring to specific data columns by name. More information appears in the article on flag rule examples and calculated columns below.

Tip: When you import a data file, Windographer tries to automatically identify data column types, but you can always make changes in the Data Columns tab of the Configure Dataset window.

Windographer uses the temperature, pressure and relative humidity data to calculate air density.

Associated Data Columns

You can also identify the data columns associated with the primary data column types. You can identify the data columns that contain the associated maximum, minimum, and standard deviation values. Windographer does not display this section for columns that are already identified as max, min or std dev for another data column. For each quality data column, you can identify the data columns to which it refers.

Windographer makes use of these associations in several ways, including its calculations and its definitions of flag rules. For example, it calculates turbulence intensity by dividing the wind speed standard deviation data by the associated mean wind speed data. When exporting data, if you change the time step, for example from 10 minutes to 60 minutes, Windographer gives special treatment to min, max, and standard deviation data columns.
